I have been excited to see this movie since the trailer came out, so opening night there I was! ?Battle: Los Angeles? kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end, even though it didn?t quite stack up to some of the better alien invasion flicks. Read my full review below before you head out to the theaters this weekend.
The creators of this movie really draw you in at the beginning of this almost 2-hour film, and their action scenes and fights were pretty darn exciting. I did feel that there was a little bit of a 90?s cheesy feel with a bit too much of the the solidarity talk and typical war speeches.
As for the cast, I like Aaron Eckhart, even though I feel like he looks too much like a contestant for ?The Bachelor.? It was also nice to see Michelle Rodriguez as I see her as a fierce woman. No one else really stood out to me good or bad and other than some of the script I enjoyed the actors.
The toughest thing for a movie like ?Battle: Los Angeles? is finding a new spin on aliens taking over our planet. I was nice to see one not focused on NY and I thought how the extra terrestrials got here was inventive. Overall the plot was my favorite part. *Spoiler Alert* They needed our water supply and were attacking from coastlines in. The good guys in this film had to get civilians out of the enemy zones, and were attempting to wipe out the alien fleet.
I wasn?t the biggest fan of all of the clich lines that made it feel like writer Christopher Bertolini was trying too hard. There was maybe one too many emotional soldier bonding moments, though I liked the development of the drama between SSgt. Nantz (Eckhart) and Cpl. Lockett. However, my biggest complaint is that I felt the movie?s aliens lacked consistency as they were near impervious to gunfire at the beginning but were dropping with one shot toward the end. These kind of inconsistencies made me think Bertolini was more concerned with the classic triumphant ending than making it feel realistic. I mean, sometimes I just found myself thinking ?this is ridiculous!?
It was an action packed flick that kept me guessing what could possibly come next! I was intrigued pretty much the whole time even though it was too far fetched for me and drawn out. After watching ?Battle: Los Angeles? I would rate it a C+. It was enjoyable, but nowhere near the likes of ?War of the Worlds? or ?District 9,? in my opinion. The actions scenes are worth seeing on the big screen, but other than that you could either wait until it comes out on DVD or skip it all together. If you do/did check it out, be sure to tell me what you thought in the section below.
