The lovely and talented Royal Pains star Reshma Shetty was awesome to interview. You can learn what we talked about as well as some juicy little details about the beautiful Reshma right here. There even some pictures and a video that you will no doubt enjoy.
I recently had the opportunity to participate in a Q&A interview with Reshma Shetty of Royal Pains fame. In case you are unaware she plays Divya Katdare the super talented physicians assistant who is struggling with her arranged marriage to be. She is an essential part of the show as well as the fictional Hank Med company.
However in real life Reshma is actually quite different from her on screen persona, including in their fashion sense. Shetty says Divya is way more fashionable and put together than she is in her own life. There are of course some ways they are similar including that they are both focused on their passions and are very generous.
Curious as to how she got the amazing role, well she was nice enough to enlighten us. It was kind of just your run of the mill way of getting a role. It was pilot season but she was in New York so she did her first audition at Rockefeller Center. A couple of weeks later she was flown to Los Angeles for a screen test. Then five days later she learned she got the part that would change her life. The show is a huge success and Shetty attributes that to great writing, casting and on-screen chemistry, which she says is because they are all wonderful friends off-screen even though they are spread out all over the place when not shooting the show.
The conversation among us all soon shifted to Reshma herself and she was more than willing to spill all to us. She was very open with the group. I discovered she studied opera and that she was actually on the path to being a doctor when she changed gears to pursue acting. That change began when she found out she could sing in high school and she realized she liked being on stage. During her college days she participated in musicals and opera as a hobby. Through that she met some amazing people who became her mentors and kind of pushed her in that direction, especially where opera was concerned. She made the decision to move to NYC and was one of the lucky ones to have a commercial agent before she moved to The Big Apple. She did a couple of musicals and plays then got her now hit show. Not bad for someone who thought they would be in med school now. Her parents who she calls very traditional and from a line of doctors were scared but are really supportive of her.
You would think having some medical knowledge would be an asset on a show like Royal Pains but Shetty said it isn?t. That is why she is gratful they have Dr. Irv their real life doctor on set. Not only that but Reshma let it be known that the group doesn?t actually film in the Hamptons as much as you would think mostly because it is so far for the crew etc but that when they make the trek it is amazing place to film.
I had a couple of things that I was really wanted to ask Reshma and luckily I got my chance.
Q. Do you have any interest in directing or writing, or is performing your focus?
A. I?m not a writer. I have tried to be, just for my own creative thing but I actually prefer drawing to writing. I am attracted to the production side of it, meaning more directory, like more the vision of the entire movie or show, per se. I think that interests me. I?m sure that at some point I will want to morph into that role. I like casting control. I have many ideas about that. I think I have a good eye for being able to see where a project should go and what its style should be. Those other things interest me, but I don?t have the knowledge of it all. Being on the show is helpful, because I get to see the behind-the-scenes being a series regular, and knowing the producers. It?s really hard work. I say this for any job, I hate people who just jump into things with no real knowledge, because they usually don?t do a very good job. I never want to be one of those people. So, I don?t want to lightly say, oh, I?ll be a producer or I?ll be a director. But, there?s definitely an interest in learning about it.
Q. Can you talk about any other projects you have going on right now?
A. I?m busy with my wedding. I?ve been very lucky in New York. I?ve done some really great readings, workshops and recently an independent movie. Our hiatus came at such a funny time, it came in December, going into January. And, of course, everything shuts down then. Now we are now in pilot season and I have my wedding. My big project has been my wedding. Hopefully, this show that I?m creating, i.e. Reshm?s wedding, will be really well. I?ve had fun, though, because USA has also helped me. We put together some webisodes about how to get married in New York. It is on the Royal Pains? web site. It?s called Royally Wed with Divya, USA?s been amazing. I had no idea it was going to turn out as great as it turned out. It?s me walking around because I?ve never been married before, and I didn?t know anything. So, meeting vendors, finding out what brides need to know, getting tips brought to you with a video. That?s been a really great project that I?ve been working on.
I actually did go check out the webisodes and they were amazing. If you are getting married or just love wedding stuff I highly recommend you checking them out.
During her time off from the show last year Shetty worked on a movie called Not for Nothing. It was a cameo role as a crazy girlfriend. She described it as a role she was drawn to and she said it was a run of fun to play a crazy woman. I can?t wait for that to come out. As for her future well it will consist of course of season three of the show as well as Hollywood. Reshma revealed L.A. is a place she hopes to be spending more time next year. She hopes to get the opportunity to work in movies as well as on the stage.
There you have it my Royal Pains Reshma Shetty interview. I can not say enough good things about her. She is talented, beautiful, has a thriving career and a personal life too it seems. It does appear like life is good for the stunning Reshma. I can?t wait to see what she will do next.
