At the Academy Awards, the most anticipated Oscar trophy is handed over to the movie dubbed ?Best Picture.? In year?s past some of the chosen recipients have led to eye rolling while others seemed spot on.
As we anticipate the 2011 Oscar Award?s show, it?s worth reflecting back at years past to remember some of the great (and not so great) films that have been honored with the award. But were all of them worthy?
If you?re anything like me, you have a longstanding grudge against those awards shows that allow any sort of academy or guild to determine the winners. While these awards are often the most valued in the industry, we the viewers are forced to sit through the snobbery and cronyism that come along with them.
As a result, the ?Best Picture? winners are usually broken down into two categories: obvious and shocking. Rather than cover the last 80 or so years worth of winners, I?ll simply offer my choice for the top five in each group from 1990 to present.
Top 5 Shocking
1. ?The English Patient? ? 1996
2. ?Shakespeare in Love? ? 1998
3. ?The Hurt Locker? ? 2009
4. ?American Beauty? ? 1999
5. ?No Country for Old Men? ? 2007
Top 5 Obvious
1. ?Titanic? ? 1997
2. ?Forrest Gump? ? 1994
3. ?Dances With Wolves? ? 1990
4. ?Slumdog Millionaire? ? 2008
5. ?The Silence Of The Lambs? ? 1991
Sure, I get it, the Academy sometimes pays homage to films that don?t have stellar ticket sales, and can sometimes be defined as ?snooze fests.? Those are shuffled into the ?Shocking? column. I mean, who wasn?t miffed that ?Hurt Locker? drowned out ?Avatar.? That was really lame.
On the other side, in the ?Obvious? column, I agreed in every case. ?Titanic? is one of the most epic films of the last few decades, and every time ?Forrest Gump? is on TNT I literally put my life on hold to watch it for the 20th time.
Here are this year?s nominees for ?Best Picture?:
Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, The King?s Speech, 127 Hours, Toy Story 3, True Grit, and Winter?s Bone
I personally think it should goto ?Inception? (obvious), but I fear it will be handed over to ?The King?s Speech? (shocking). Sigh.
